چکیده

This report does not constitute a publication and is for information only. All data herein are to be considered provisional. Abstract The population of Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) in the western Aleutian Islands has declined significantly and is currently listed as an endangered species. Among the possible limiting factors for this population is predation by transient killer whales (Orcinus orca). The purpose of this report is to provide some analysis of the feasibility of limiting killer whale predation on Steller sea lions in the western Aleutian Islands using marine mammal deterrents. This report provides a review of various marine mammal deterrents, used primarily in fisheries, to either prevent marine mammal entanglement or predation. Deterrent methods are evaluated based upon various factors including effectiveness, particularly with killer whales, potential impacts on non-target species, including Steller sea lions, and feasibility of use in the western Aleutian Islands. Possible deterrent options are considered, however, all would require significant research before implementation. Based upon a thorough review of the literature, lack of previous long-term success and high degrees of uncertainty, it is unlikely that deterrents would be successful in this application.

Examining the evidence for killer whale predation on Steller sea lions in British Columbia and Alaska

The discovery of ipper tags from 14 Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) in the stomach of a dead killer whale (Orcinus orca) in 1992 focused attention on the possible role of killer whale predation in the decline of Steller sea lions in western Alaska. In this study, mariners in British Columbia and Alaska were surveyed to determine the frequency and outcome of observed attacks on sea lion...

Assessing Killer Whale Predation on Steller Sea Lions from Field Observations in Kenai Fjords, Alaska

The behavioral and predatory patterns of Gulf of Alaska (GOA) transient killer whales (Orcinus orca) were studied between 2000 and 2005 using remote video and vessel-based observations near the Chiswell Island Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) rookery and in the broader Kenai Fjords (KF) region of the northern GOA. GOA transient killer whales were observed on 118 d over the 6-yr period; the...

An investigation into the possible relationship between killer whale (Orcinus orca) predation and the continuing decline of the Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) population

Foraging ecology of marine mammals is often poorly understood because of the inherent difficulties in studying them in their natural environment. Increasingly, fatty acid signature analysis of blubber is being used to evaluate dietary preferences; therefore it is important to fully understand the biochemical composition of this tissue. The purpose of the present study was to describe the charac...

An Accounting of the Sources of Steller Sea Lion Mortality

During 1991-2000, the western stock of Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus) declined at 5.2% (SE = 0.3%) per year. The population declined at statistically significant rates (P < 0.10) in all regions except the eastern Aleutian Islands. The greatest rates of declines occurred in the eastern and central Gulf of Alaska and the western Aleutian Islands (all greater than 8.6% per year). Using a p...
